About Us

Hi, I’m Mark Compton. I’m a visual note taker, visual facilitator, and management consultant.

Drawing, sketching, art and design have always played a role in my life. I come from a family of artists and designers.

After college the practicalities of life drew me to Management Consulting, and for over the past fifteen years, I worked with Fortune 500 companies, non-profits, federal government agencies and small businesses across the U.S. In this time, I have worked on change management projects, growth strategies, trainings, investments, and performance improvements. As well as founding Bright Ink, I’ve worked for one of the top global management consulting firms and a few boutique consulting firms.

Ten years ago I discovered visual note taking. Immediately, I recognized Visual Notes as an immensely valuable tool to facilitate organizational communication, learning and development, and messaging. People from all walks of life are drawn to the arts and aesthetics. Visual Notes are a hybrid of “art” and practical notes. They document, synthesize and get your message across in a fun, memorable, and shareable way!

I have developed my own unique method of creating Visual Notes. Because of my background across many industries, I take the time to understand your organization and business. I ensure that I grasp the key points that you want included in your visuals and text. I think synthesize this and your live event into an evolving piece of poster art.

More about me? …I’m also a trained PMP, and familiar with LSS as well as several other management approaches. I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts from NYU and a Master of Public Policy from Duke. Why Visual Meetings?

No matter the organizational need or the improvement a team or company hopes to make, communication amongst stakeholders is the linchpin to success. Strategies and visions let a team know where they are heading, tactics and tools help to solve problems or grow to new possibilities. But, without effective cross-team communication - visions, strategies, and tools mean nothing.

I've seen it too often, when the team doesn’t get management’s message, when ideas are lost, when leadership doesn’t hear a team’s vision - it is costly. For many organizations the stakes are too high to afford miscommunications – and the written or spoken word alone is not sufficient in today’s visual world.

The success of any communication resides in ensuring there is duplication and understanding from sender(s) to recipient(s) – that is, that the receiver captures all concepts intended.

Visual notes capture and highlight key thoughts and put them in context where they otherwise may be lost or forgotten. Such notes focus participants on key concepts, so they are addressed and not brushed aside.

This is true in brainstorming, lectures, strategic visionings, team messaging, negotiations, or learnings. Visual notes support communication whether it’s going up, down, across the organization, or externally.

For as much value as power points offer to a speakers presentation, they don’t capture dialogue. Misused or unsupported, as a static medium, Power Points can even have a stultifying effect on an audience.

Rarely do heavy texts capture broad messages or visions and effectively relay them. While the written word is necessary for documenting specifics, heavy textual documents alone may not reach the spirit of much of your team.

Take this written page as an example. These very simple simple cartoons repeat my textual message visually. They are faster to absorb than the text, and they can be scanned over and over which reaffirms the concepts.
